Cindy writes about smugmug and jR Customization:
Â
“I first learned of smugmug hosting by a friend and was excited to finally have my photos online for all to enjoy. I never expected it would lead to actual sales, but when I started being asked to photograph a little more and more I knew the first thing that would need a facelift was my website.
Being crazy enough to think I could update my own site, I started researching the internet for ideas and jR Customization kept popping up. After viewing the work he had done for other Photographers and reviewing his blog site, I found out he could also work with smumug sites and that’s when I knew he was the designer to turn my worries over to.
Being new to web marketing I didn’t really have a clear picture of what I needed to get started. After just one conversation with Jerry he knew exactly what I was going for and instantly set up very clear steps for me to get started. Along the way he catered to my every design need and I never had to wait days for an answer to a question. Each time he knew exactly what I was tangled up with and would calmly walk me through the steps to fix it and always followed up to see if I was ok with the changes.Â
Jerry’s broad computer talent and aggressive marketing strategies has provided me with more customer oriented site in which to advertise and market my photography. I now have a website that speaks to who I am as a photographer. I no longer waste time worrying over my dull website and can now spend more time getting out and taking photos; which is what it really is all about.
Hiring Jerry was the best marketing tool I have ever purchased and I will always look to him for future updates and marketing advice. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Jerry for all your skills and patience.”

Document management software company, Version One, has revealed that 41% of IT professionals admit that they “don’t know” what cloud computing is
Whether it’s file conversion, slide show creation, online design tools (like the agent website admin tool), social media, you name it. You’ve probably used a technology that is high above all of the other PC based applications.
The key question here is why one would move from PC-based applications to internet-based software?
One answer to that is some applications like social media only exist on the internet while others that do live on the cloud make work and collaboration easier. A second answer is that it is just inevitable that people that communicate for a living will transition to internet-based applications. There are technological, economic and communication reasons for why Cloud
Computing is becoming common.
Technologically, we use Cloud Computing - Â because we can!! Economically, there is less expense, It makes it easier to interact with target audiences. On the other hand, we do have a downside to Cloud Computing
How did we get here? ( according to James Horton maintains in his work ‘A Walk in the Cloud’ )
It started with a mainframe as big as a room. 50 to 60 years ago, this machine was fed applications and data on spools of paper tape. It machine performed calculations and spit out answers. Then they hooked terminals to the main frame so that data could be entered. These were called ‘dumb terminals’…and rightly so. Shortly after the hooked up some clunky telephone links to extend the distance between the dumb terminals and the mainframe Then Apple and IBM appeared in the late 70’s and brought with them their own CPU, data storage and applications. There was a huge waste in processing and storage. If one took the disc out of the computer, until the disc was returned to the computer or the data was re-entered, the data was completely inaccessible.
One of the solutions for this problem was the LAN (local area network) - all the computers connected to a storage center or server. Mobility was still an issue, because working outside of the LAN required a dial up modem . Then there was Compuserve and AOL which offered email exchange where people could communicate and send files. The Web showed up in the mid-90’s… that led way for the internet. Email moved from private to internet based. Websites soared from hundreds to thousands to millions. Faster and faster servers meant better applications, storage and processing power. Considering the processing power of servers, they started removing storage (hard drives) from the computers and hosting applications and storage on the servers. This was called ‘Thin Client or running thin” At first things ran slow until data centers appeared. These housed thousands of servers run by companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google and IBM. As data centers grew, the idea that the internet was turning into something like the idea of the power grid came to light. No matter where you are, you should be able to plug in and have access to it and benefit from the internets applications and processing power. The Rise of the Cloud
The Cloud has slowly taken center stage for data, social media, storage, applications and mobility - the capacity of the cloud is beyond anyone.
James Horton maintains in his work ‘A Walk in the Cloud’, that the image of the cloud comes from engineers and technicians who use actually use a picture of a cumulous cloud to designate a network outside of an organization.
He also says that: Cloud Computing requires high-speed broadband service and enormous data storage, but current predictions are that nothing will stop the internet from reaching petabyte size and speed. That is a thousand trillion bytes of storage, an unimaginable size, and equally astonishing speed.
Reuven Cohen stated - In about 25 years from now I can imagine having a conversation with my kids that goes something like this. “Son, back in my day we used to store all our data on a single computer.” My son in turn says, “Dad, that’s crazy, I have every song I’ve ever listened to and every movie I’ve ever watched on my brand new ibrain, …anytime anywhere”
Some prominent cloud applications:
Google Docs - online word processing and collaborations. (spreadsheet and presentations) MyKW.kw.com - portal to all things KW. Godaddy (fax through email) - fax by email. Youtube & KWConnect - Online hosting of videos GoToMeetings - host meetings and webinars through this application. LinkedIn - social networking for business Facebook - different approach to myspace Picnik - online photo editing. Mozy - file backup service.Just to name a few. There are many more than what are listed and there are many duplicate services for most that I have included.
The cloud is not really a technology by itself. It’s a new approach to building IT services that uses the quickly increasing horsepower of servers and data centers.
It also uses virtualization. Virtualization technology is the combination of many servers into large computing pools and the dividing up of single servers into multiple virtual servers that can be spun up and powered down at will.
Cloud computing can be separated into three segments: “applications,” “platforms,” and “infrastructure .”
Application
The application segment is also called Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is well known and consists of software applications delivered over the Web
By running applications on centralized servers, rather than onsite services, business can cut serious costs.
There are other hidden costs that one avoids as well with Cloud -based
applications and storage.
There is no need for individual maintenance, backup and updating. The Cloud does it.
The are no extra costs for applications like Microsoft Office. One pays for the application only per need.
That traditional licensing world is dying. Open-source licensing has become an on-ramp to closed data services, hardly what its creators envisaged.
Cloud vendors are going to become the biggest crusaders for open source, because it means more developers creating more on-ramps to the cloud.
The cloud offers a low cost thin client approach. A cloud communicator can buy a cheap laptop and achieve the same potential as a expensive laptop loaded with applications.
Google Docs is a great example of Software as a Service.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure, aka Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Iaas) - refers to remotely accessible server and storage capacity
IaaS is normally what most people think of when they hear the term “cloud computing”. Using this model, a person or company essentially leases out infrastructure resources on which their applications are deployed.
The applications are then able to scale up and down as necessary, on-demand, using the provider’s infrastructure - saving the organization a lot of capital expenditures and operating expenses in acquiring, deploying, configuring, and managing the infrastructure.
You need a second data center for disaster recovery only but the investment in land, building, and infrastructure is too costly You want to leverage geographical based load balancing to better serve visitors but wish to avoid the investment in multiple data centers or hassle of locating servers around the nation.Example - A mykw.kw.com vendor search for data backup and disaster recovery and found Logos and mozy as perfect examples.
Platform
Platform-as-a-Service is a delivery of computing platforms over the web. It enables one (or a company) to create web applications quickly without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying software and hardware. Platform as a Services provides all the facilities required to support the complete lifecycle of
A perfect example of this is MyKW.kw.com. this platform, coded entirely in Java, is hosted outside KW. The burden of uptime and backup is on the datacenter and not KWRI.
 Security
If data is stored on a cloud, then it is not safely behind the walls or firewalls of the company. It’s out there where hackers come from.
The idea of keeping your information outside the network where it is vulnerable will depend on the reputation and credibility of the vendor. It’s more likely to reside on internal, well guarded networks.
Last weekend, Microsoft (in the United States) was forced to admit that it had irretrievably lost all online data belonging to owners of the T-Mobile Sidekick, a smartphone that backs up its data online, in the cloud.
“It’s certainly an extraordinary situation,” a Microsoft spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal , adding that Microsoft and T-Mobile “… are working to do everything they can for customers.”
Concern over data loss and legal uncertainty may also delay the development of cloud computing
Financial information is one thing, but communication of general day-to-day operations is another. Many communications are not as sensitive as said data and could be better served through a cloud.
Look to the Clouds
So who is affected by this shift in our computing industry?
The overall shift would affect companies and a few different industries including software companies, internet service providers and hardware manufacturers.
Companies in each of these industries will face significant change if cloud computing is to be the next major step.
Speaking of clouds. These Tech Alliance Calls for Keller Williams are now hosted on the KWConnect cloud. You can access them from our MC Tech Community within the MyKW.kw.com - also hosted on a cloud. This is only after I log into Voicetext’s hosting site - on a cloud, where the data is stored, and pull down the mp3 once it is ready.
