Like most small business owners, Beverly Irwin knew she needed a Web site to help market her services as a freelance makeup artist. But she cringed at the prospect of spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to establish a presence in cyberspace.
So Irwin called Exxia.Net, a Davie-based Web design and business solutions firm. And within a few days, her customized Web site was up and running.
“I called other Web designers and got prices of between $800 and $1,200,” said Irwin, who lives in Fort Lauderdale. “I had heard about Exxia.Net, and when I called them, they were right within my means.”
When Roberto Samayoa founded Exxia.Net in 1998, he envisioned creating an online business directory for Broward County, a sort of localized Google.com that would allow consumers to, for example, enter their ZIP code and the word “doughnut” and obtain a list of doughnut shops in their neighborhood. Each business that signed onto the concept was to receive a one-page Web-based advertisement.
“We had a hard time getting businesses for the directory,” said the 31-year-old entrepreneur, “All they were interested in at that point was to have a Web site.”
So Samayoa segued into the Web site design business. And by 2002, he was so busy designing sites that he brought in a partner, Todd Weidert to help handle the workload. Although the two design sites for all types and sizes of businesses, they realized that a market opportunity existed for a company willing to design Web sites for businesses on a budget.
“Most Web designers are expensive and overpriced,” Samayoa said. “So we thought rather than overcharging the customer at the beginning and making, say, $1,000, let’s keep them as a lifelong customer and maybe make $10,000 off them over time by charging what should be right.”
The average Web site Exxia handles costs about $1,500 to design, Samayoa said, although the firm designs sites costing from $45 to $20,000. It recently completed a site for Fish, a new seafood restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. The cost: $1,600, which included all the photography.
Samayoa said that most of Exxia’s customers come by way of referrals, although he sends out direct mail offers to newly formed businesses as well. The company now has about 100 regular customers, for which Exxia provides Web hosting and other services such as networking and commercial photography.
Although customer growth has been steady with an additional five or six new customers each month, Samayoa did have a hurdle to overcome early in the company’s life. “It took us about a year to find a company to host our servers that wasn’t so expensive that we couldn’t make a profit,” he said. “It really was a challenge to find someone that would charge us less but still be reliable.”
Exxia’s big test came during Hurricane Wilma. All of its customers’ Web sites remained up and running throughout the storm, thanks to its choice of a hosting company in Miami that had a generator and enough gasoline to run it for 37 days, if necessary.
Samayoa feels good that he can grow a business and make money while providing services desperately needed by many small businesses.
“We’ve created a business model that allows us to charge less than anyone else and still make a profit,” he said. “But the main idea is to really give other entrepreneurs a chance to put most of their money back into their businesses rather than into their Web site.”
Something is rotten in the state of Florida?
With the accusations this week that Scott Rothstein, fast-living Fort Lauderdale attorney and friend and donor to Gov. Charlie Crist, orchestrated a massive fraud out of his law firm, there are now three Crist moneymen caught up in alleged criminal or extremely shady activity.
Crist, whose career has been fueled by his skill as a fundraiser, finds himself entangled with the trio of scandals just as his U.S. Senate primary campaign against conservative Marco Rubio is attracting national attention. And there's already talk down in Florida that the Crist-linked scandals may become a factor in the primary contest.
So what's it all about? Let's go to the tape.
Scott Rothstein Crist claimed to reporters today that he has only a passing acquaintance with Rothstein. "Well, he had supported me like he did to many others," Crist said . "And that's about the extent of it."
But that's not the way Rothstein -- and many news reports over the years -- describe their relationship.
A self-described "Charlie Crist Republican," Rothstein reportedly met Crist in the 1990s, and Crist introduced him to Republican politics in Florida. Rothstein began to raise money for Crist. In a 2008 profile of Rothstein the Indicted in September for an alleged fraudulent fund-raising and lobbying scheme, ophthalmologist Alan Mendelsohn is another well-connected Florida political player with close ties to Crist.
He allegedly created phony lobbying organizations which raised big dollars from industry sources. Mendelsohn, who has plead not guilty, allegedly diverted over $600,000 of that money for his personal use, including for credit card bills and SAT prep fees for his kids. And he falsely told the FBI that he had used his influence with Crist -- attorney general during the period in question -- to quash a probe into a Florida insurance company.
What are his ties to Crist? He hosted a doctors' fundraiser at his home in 2006 that netted over $100,000 for Crist's gubernatorial campaign. And he served on the transition team after Crist won the election.
Crist was so cozy with the family that he wrote a glowing med school recommendation for Mendelsohn's son -- despite the fact that the son hadn't taken the MCAT.
Among other things, the letter states: "I have known Benjamin and his family for several years and know that Benjamin's affiliation with the University of Florida will mutually enhance the reputation of both Benjamin and the Medical Program."
Harry Sargeant You may remember Harry Sargeant, the GOP bundler and defense contractor who briefly made headlines in the presidential election last year.
A massive contract won by Sargeant's company to deliver fuel to the U.S. military in Iraq via Jordan was the subject of an investigation for possible overcharging by Rep. Henry Waxman's oversight committee in 2008. A lawsuit from another firm has also alleged a "bribery scheme" by Sargeant to pay off the Jordanians to keep other companies out.
The John McCain campaign in August 2008 was forced to return $50,000 bundled through Sargeant after media outlets reported that the money came from sketchy first-time donors and were solicited by a business partner of Sargeant who is a foreign national. And in February, that business partner, a Jordanian named Ala'a al-Ali, was indicted for allegedly funneling illegal contributions to the McCain and other presidential campaigns, as well as to Crist. Sargeant appeared in the indictment but was not charged with a crime.
Despite the national cameo, Sargeant's real bailiwick was Florida GOP politics, where his close friend and former Florida State fraternity brother -- Crist -- was top dog. Sargeant was a big contributor to state Republicans and was the finance chair for the state party until he stepped down amid scandal in January. He loaned a corporate jet to Crist's 2006 campaign, and, according to the The golden Dome of the Rock dominated the landscape of the Old City as Crist and the others crowded around the windows. As the flight approached the Dead Sea, the Israeli escort peeled away, leaving the Jordanian chopper to cross over the nearly dry Jordan River and northeast toward Abdullah's compound on the outskirts of Amman.
Sargeant, who suggested and helped arrange the visit, met Crist at the landing pad. A waiting fleet of silver Mercedes and BMW cars took the group along a forest-lined road through the compound to Abdullah's home. Kendrick Meek's my Congressman. He did a town hall on Health Care, and he was amazing-- all the facts and figures on the tip of his tongue, no room for Repubs to make up stuff. He's likeable and personable, but he's definitely a nose-to-the-grindstone kind of guy, he's got a safe district, and he's never really had to campaign. He'd be a fantastic Senator, but it's all uphill, and he knows it.
But really, I wanted to post this comment for you folks:
Google "Chain Gang Charlie Florida" and have some fun. He's swept this one under the rug for years, but look for him to drag it out to bolster his "toughoncrime" Con bona fides.
This is going to be fun, folks! Enjoy the ride!
