I bought my domain way back from a different registrar so I choose to use existing domain. To prevent users from claiming playboy.com or yahoo.com (which probably isn’t yours), Google will need to verify if you really own the domain you entered. You will be presented two options to verify: one is to upload an HTML file to your site, the other is to add a CNAME record. The most straightforward way is to add a CNAME record. Most domain registrars will throw in the DNS management as a freebie upon registration. If the first option is too confusing for you, or if you don’t have access to modify the DNS records, you may upload an HTML file, but then again, you need to have your domain hosted to do this.
Upon verification, everything else is already activated except Email and Chat. With regards to the Chat, you just have to wait it out. Google is probably flipping switches and rotating dials to enable your chat feature. As with Email, you have to tell your domain name that Google will host your email service. This is done by pointing the MX Entry in the DNS management to Google’s server.
If you cannot access your DNS records, its not yet the end of the world. You may use your hosting control panel to change MX Entry. My host is on cPanel. You can find the modify MX Entry under Mail. Since cPanel provides only one MX Entry, it is logical to put the first one (highest priority). After configuring the MX Entry, Google will verify if you really pointed your it to their server. Depending on how fast your domain name propagates on the web, verification can be completed in 5 minutes to 48 hours. After verifying, it will take another hour of switch flipping and dial rotating for Google operators to get your Email running.
