About this book Film is in a state of rapid change: the transition from analog to digital is profoundly affecting not just filmmaking and film distribution but a number of other facets of the industry, including the ways in which films are archived. In From Grain to Pixel—the first volume in the new Framing Film series from Amsterdam University Press—Giovanna Fossati brings together scholars and archivists to discuss their theories on digitization and to propose new possibilities for future archives. “Giovanna Fossati does more than simply give the most thoughtful, thorough and up-to-date account of the transformation in motion picture archiving over the last decades. She forces us to reconsider the nature of the moving image and prepare for a new era of communication and preservation.”—Tom Gunning, University of Chicago“Scholarly research on film and media is profoundly influenced by the way in which moving images are preserved and made accessible for scrutiny. About this book Large international events like the Olympic Games put cities on the world map. CityEvents, place selling in a Media Age addresses the question how cities have been raising their profile internationally by hosting large international events throughout the twentieth century. It explores this question by introducing the CityEvent model. This model allows for the study of large international events from a threefold perspective, analytically integrating the roles of the media, host cities and event owners with each other. By means of this model, developments and transformations in the hosting of events are reconstructed in relation to historical developments in the media. This thesis provides a history of event-based place selling and simultaneously offers insights into the hosting of current and future events. The cities of Amsterdam, Berlin and Helsinki, both as hosts of the Olympic Games and as European Capitals of Culture, feature as case studies. |
