You gotta read the fine print. At the very bottom of Google's explanation of the new DNS service, they put in a disclaimer about speed. My understanding is that if the DNS is geographically far from you, then speed will be slower. Therefore, sticking with your ISP's DNS server may make more sense. Here's the Google disclaimer:
Note, however, that because nameservers geolocate according to the resolver's IP address rather than the user's, Google Public DNS has the same limitations as other open DNS services: that is, the server to which a user is referred might be farther away than one to which a local DNS provider would have referred. This could cause a slower browsing experience for certain sites.

Google DNS is a big deal.
Google announced today that it is launching Google Public DNS, a free DNS resolver that promises to speed up the web. This is a big deal for web site owners and domainers. Here’s why.
1. Google may have just killed OpenDNS. OpenDNS does effectively the same thing Google hopes to do with its DNS. OpenDNS (which I personally use) makes money by showing ads when you type in a domain that doesn’t exist. This is similar to what Verizon does. Now Google is competing with OpenDNS, and has a lot more to gain datawise. Meaning it will probably be free, with no catches, and could kill OpenDNS if Google adds more features to match OpenDNS.
2. Google could bring the ad game to non resolving domains. If they want to, they can play the OpenDNS game (see #1).
3. Public DNS will enable Google to determine where your browser takes you. For now, the company claims it won’t hijack your browser and play tricks, but the potential is there.
4. Data, Data, Data. DNS operators get loads of data. From non-existent domain queries (which many ISPs have sold to domainers) to traffic data, it’s a lot more than Google already gets. Google gets most of its data from searches that start at Google. It also gets some from its Adsense ads, Google Analytics, etc. But now it has the power to get complete web browsing data for people who use its DNS. Imagine if it used this data in its search algorithms?
Google just announced today a new public DNS aimed at making browsing even a faster experience. DNS or domain name servers are servers that translate domain names to IP addresses that computers can understand. Having a faster DNS can definitely make surfing the web a faster experience. In the past, I’ve used OpenDNS as an alternative to my ISP nameservers. Now Google has their own.

To use Google DNS.
In Windows, you can open up your network interface IP properties and enter the Google nameservers. In Linux, you can place the Google nameservers in resolv.conf. In your router, you can replace your ISP nameservers with Google’s nameservers. Complete instructions on how to use Google’s nameservers are available from Google’s website.
Google DNS was no surprise to me. It makes perfect sense. What’s next? Web hosting.

Posted by: Joe | If you have a static IP you don't have to install any software to provide content filtering services if you have a dynamic IP download the software in their site(OpenDNS > Support > Knowledge Base > How to enable dynamic IP updates for a network) and enter your OpenDNS account details into it and the software update your IP every time it changes. Lastly go to your Settings in the dashboard select Content filtering ,depending on your needs select different level of content filtering or use custom settings by clicking on customize button using which you can grant access only the required type of sites and also you can block particular domains(keep your account details form the other who use you computer and want to access blocked sites)
OpenDNS speeds up the loading of websites and also decrease the starting time of downloads and increases the torrent speed marginally but doesn't improve your direct download speeds .
